How to Pray Simply

If you’re new to faith, prayer might feel a little mysterious — or even intimidating.
How do you start? What do you say? Are there right words you have to use?

Take a deep breath.

The good news is that prayer is not about getting the words exactly right — it’s about connecting with God honestly. Prayer is simply talking to the God who loves you, listens to you, and already knows your heart.

You don’t need fancy language. You don’t need to follow a script. You don’t need to wait until you “have it all together.”

You can come exactly as you are.

What Prayer Really Is

Prayer isn’t a performance. It’s a relationship.

Imagine talking to a trusted friend who loves you unconditionally. That’s what God invites us into through prayer.

In the Bible, Jesus encourages people to pray simply and sincerely:

“When you pray, don’t babble on and on… Your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7-8, NLT)

Prayer is less about perfect wording and more about real conversation. It’s where you share your heart, your worries, your gratitude, your dreams — and where you listen for God’s gentle voice in return.

Simple Ways to Start Praying

If you’re wondering where to begin, here are a few easy ideas:

1. Talk to God Like a Friend

You don’t have to be formal. You can speak in everyday language, just like you’re talking to someone you trust. Start with something like, “Hi God, it’s me. Here’s what’s on my heart today…”

2. Thank Him for Something

Gratitude opens our hearts. You might thank God for a sunny day, for a kind word from a friend, or simply for giving you another breath. No gratitude is too small to share.

3. Ask for Help

God cares about every detail of your life. Whether it’s strength to get through a hard day or courage to face a fear, you can ask Him for help.

4. Be Honest About How You’re Feeling

You don’t have to hide anything from God. Sadness, anger, joy, confusion — He welcomes it all.

5. Use Short Prayers Throughout the Day

Prayer doesn’t have to be long or reserved for “special” times. A quick “Thank You, God” or “Please help me, Lord” in the middle of your busy day counts just as much.

If You Don’t Know What to Say

Sometimes the hardest part is just starting.

If you’re stuck, you can pray Scripture — like Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing”) — or even pray silently, letting your heart speak without words.
God hears even the prayers you can’t put into sentences.

You can also pray a very simple prayer like this:

“God, I don’t know what to say, but I want to know You. Help me to trust You and learn how to talk with You.”

That’s enough.

God honors your honest beginnings.

Remember: Prayer Is a Journey

Like any relationship, learning to pray takes time. Some days it might feel easy; other days, it might feel awkward. That’s okay.

What matters is showing up.

The more you pray — even in short, simple ways — the more you’ll notice God’s presence in your life. You’ll start to see that He’s been listening all along.

So start today, right where you are.
No pressure. No perfect words needed.
Just an open heart and a willingness to begin.

God is already ready to meet you.

"And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words."

— Romans 8:26 (NLT)

A Conversation, Not a Performance

When you pray, you are stepping into a sacred conversation with the One who loves you most. It doesn’t matter how many words you use or how polished your sentences are. What matters is that you show up — honestly, humbly, and with even the smallest mustard seed of faith.

God delights in every whispered prayer, every tear, every wordless sigh.

Today, begin with whatever words you have. He’s already listening.
